My external HDD died, taking all my music with it. So I've started listening to internet radio. Anybody got any reccomendations? I'm looking for regular music, but also a good videogame OST one. :)

Sorry for your loss, happened to me a few weeks back, I almost cried... I'm not big on music though, so there isn't much I could recommend.

pandora.com (http://www.pandora.com) gives you custom stations tailored around music you already like: You give it a band or bands or songs you like and they find similar tunes.

slacker.com (http://www.slacker.com) has a bunch of stations, plus you can customize a new one which will play only the bands you specify.

soma.fm (http://www.soma.fm) has a bunch of different streaming stations, a lot of groove and downtempo stuff, but I love their indie rock station and have lately been listening to their "secret agent" station, which sets the mood for the latest CGTalk Challenge well.

imeem (http://www.imeem.com) has a lot of user generated playlists, and is great if you have specific songs you want to hear now, not just a random tune.

My external HDD died, taking all my music with it.

I'd sh** twice & die if that happened. I've got ~24,000 songs that took me forever to rip. I even got rid of the originals since the CDs were taking up waaaay too much space. If my collection died, I'd probably be in some corner twitching and drooling like a mental patient. :p

For radio, I stick with either Rock Paradise, .977 Hitz, or .977 80's.

Perhaps you should also back your files up on physical media as well as another external harddive. I bought an additional 1TB drive for this very purpose, it helps me sleep better at night.;)

I'm so turned off by current day radio, regular type I mean here, that whenever anyone says internet radio, I groan immediately. I hate DJ's, and all their retarded drive time talk, with their overly loud voices, stupid sound board effects and whacky-zaney conversations.... The radio has become another MTV, with nothing but talk, and little to no music of any genre being played.

So I gotta ask, is there something I'm missing with internet radio? Is there more music being played, and no dj's, or is it a clone of regular radio? I'd try it out, and see for myself, without asking but I'm afraid if there's some sort of software to download and install, and with my current prejudices against radio, I'd probably just give up on it without even trying.

I've got 3.5TB of storage spread out across multiple drives. It's backed up. :)

No DJ's on any internet radio I've ever heard mate. Just music :)

Thanks for all the links guys. Anyone know of a good videogame OST one? Like with everything mixed in?

You got to try Spotify. I havn't opened my Itunes since I started using it. Its completely changed the way I listen to music.

Spotify and Grooveshark seem like the same thing, and while cool, they're totally flawed. I don't want to search for music every time I want to listen to something. And I don't want to have to develop a library one song at a time. I want to get full albums and discographies and then play songs on shuffle. These services are great for listening to music you don't have in your library and checking out new artists, but I can't imagine setting up seriously long playlists.

As far as internet radio goes, I usually just bounce around through a bunch of electronic channels of different genres until one is playing something good.

I've looked at groveshark and from my short time with it, you seem correct. But spotify is not like that. Spotify allows you to search for an artist and see thier full albums and discographies pretty much anything they have ever released. And there is a shuffle play function... And playlist are really simple to do aswell.. Just a matter of drag ond drop. Spotify is like you media player or itunes but with rediculosly large personal music library.
The Internet radio way of listening to music is all well and good but i personally dnt like it, because it doesn't allow you to listen to exactly what you want to listen to.

but dude you can just create a playlist of the music you like on spotify (like you would with any other music player) so you dont have to search for it everytime and you can shuffle through them :)

Not by artist necessarily, but there are so many channels of net radio that it's impossible for you to find a station to stay on. Some of these channels are so specific and often run large blocks by the same artist or sub-genre, if that's what you're into.

I pay £10 a month for napster, means I can listen to whatever I want pretty much with some exceptions i.e. some stuff is not on napster yet...

It's a good service, no adds...

Well, I signed up for spotify yesterday and they say they'll email you if they let you in... If you can get results in Albums that would be awesome. I just realized another issue, though. It doesn't sync with your mp3 player; or does it?

This thread gave me a good excuse to go from lurker to registered user.

When creating game assets i love listening to music, and had found the perfect internet radio station to help me enjoy the time working.

I highly recommend No-Life Radio: http://nolife-radio.com/# (http://nolife-radio.com/#):thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

It is by far one of the best stations I have listened to.

I used to listen to this station at work all the time. If you're down with soundtracks it's great. There are a bunch of video game soundtracks up as well. I'm not sure how often you can request a song there, think it's about every hour or so unless it's changed recently.
