Hi Game Artisans.
I recently made this same post over at polycount, and i'm posting it here to gain your feedback, and hopefully, your support.
Just thought i'd let you in on a project i've started recently. Gamefolio will be a new website which will provide all game artists (of any skill level) with a free portfolio website, along with a small community and various other smaller features.
The idea came to me after talking with some artists who lack a portfolio simply because they either cannot build websites, don't know how to present their work, or cannot afford the domain name and hosting costs each year.
While the service wont become available until later in the year, i thought it would be a good idea to let you know about it, even if you have a website, you can still either upload your work to the provided template.
I am also considering allowing members to use their own websites (html) inside the service, meaning essentially you have your own html coded website hosted for free.
Hopefully the idea is something that will appeal to you, any questions or suggestions, just reply here or visit the website:
Gamefolio.net (http://www.gamefolio.net)
Also, looking for support on the development side if anyone is interested, so contact me in the same way if that interests you.
Planned Feature List:
- Ability to upload work, it is then automatically added to your portfolio, you can comment on the development of the project/asset, list credits, etc.
- Each portfolio piece has a comments section, when logged in you can comment on other peoples work, giving critiques, etc. The comments section stays hidden by default (and is showable) to minimize clutter on the portfolio.
- Upon creating your portfolio, you are given two options, either follow the standard gamefolio template (with customizable coloring, header image, etc.), or input custom html (this will take away the other built in features, but might add that extra flare to your portfolio, your choice.
- Your account is free to create, and so is your portfolio. However all portfolios (template or custom html) will include a 30 pixel high bar across the top of your portfolio page, this links back to the homepage, and provides access to your account via a link.
- Each week there will be a featured portfolio, perhaps for certain individuals we will run interviews with them about their portfolio of work.
- We will allow for a job posting board (two, one for mods, the other for paid gigs). You can then post your interest on the job board, and the employer will be linked straight to your portfolio of work and resume/cv.
- Community forum, this is not an attempt at competing with the other game artist forums, but to provide additional community interactive, discussions will be directed towards finding jobs in the industry, questions about education, and so on.
- Portfolio commenting will allow employers who look at your portfolio to comment on it, this will be made mandatory for all employers who post on the job board, if they view a portfolio, they must comment on it, these comments are private to the artist in question and the employer.
- A 'reference' feature will enable artists who are currently in the industry, or have been to receive a written reference from their previous employers. This will be displayed along with their resume/cv.
- Status updates (similar to that of MSN, Twitter, Facebook) will enable you to state whether your looking for work, a mod team, or if you just want to let the community know what your working on/doing in the industry. (Not, however, if that is having a coffee at Starbucks with your friends, that stays on Twitter! :P)
Cheers.
