A fan-based competition based on everyone’s favorite heroes; we are here again in 2009 to bring things to the next level. Are they the same as last years rule, or did certain things change?

~ Yeah, I assume so too. The new brief (http://www.comiconchallenge.com/2009/readbrief.php) pretty much says it how it is:

"The rules are simple. Take your favorite “action-based” comic book super hero or super villain and create a fan-based representation of him, her, or it! Additionally, you may now re-create this character as if they were in a different time period"

Comics include Manga, many people did Anime/Manga & Manhwa characters. Don't think robots or mecha's are gonna be allowed.

I really would love to do Batman (that came out wrong, you know what I mean), simply because he is the only hero character I know which I kept up with...all the others are either unknown to me or I don't know enough about them.

However, there will be loads of Batmans running around, and I simply would like to know the limitations of the rules so I can use it to my advantage, you know, the entire approach of 'make them unique'?

But if Mech's are allowed, would Jehuty be allowed too? Zone of the Ender's FTW?

That is a very good question. And I am no authority, but I reckon If you are using a new concept and arent using any of the same assets from that last unfinished entry, you should be ok.

According to one of the requirements, you must include an original small comic book cover or page of the character you choose to create. As far as I know there's no Xenosaga manga so does it mean any character from the series is prohibited?

I'm thinking doing the Silver Surfer for 3D, mainly just so I can focus all that time on developing anatomy skills and teach myself some high poly modelling stuff without having to worry that I won't be bothered with texturing when it gets round to that.

~ Ritorian, I'd say Leonardo. I always like the ones that I 'recognise'. Being introduced to obscure characters is cool too sometimes, but there is nothing quite like that feeling of: "Oh that looks just like him. I remember reading the comics and it looking exactly like that". Know what I mean?
Last year's winner was Rocksteady from Teenage Turtles, but I don't think I would have liked it so much if didn't grow up with him.

Hey walrus...i´m on the cgtalk´s secret agent challenge too, but this theme is so damn awesome that i´ll do it anyway:D of course it will be tough to start after that and sharing time with work,personal life etc...well, i don´t know too, but really it´s an amazing theme.

The characters can be doing anything when you pose them.
Joint entries = Two people working together on one piece

I started reading some background stories behind the characters. Like the Marvel ones, damn those ages and universes are hard to understand for a comic-noob like me :flag: When I saw a cool character and started brainstorming about them changing into another era, I scrolled down and it all ready exist in the other universe/earth/age :(

Mogster - Imho it's not worth doing if I can't do it well. And I'm not a speed-demon like dwinbotp who can pump out a gorgeous painting in a ridiculously short amount of time. But I guess I can practice getting faster - If I think of anything really good, maybe I'll still do it. Most of my ideas so far have been more humorous and clever than cool (like the Edwardian Ghost Rider on a flaming Penny Farthing) but with those judges, I suspect you need something badass, not funny, to win.

Like walrus said, you may not win, but trust me you are still good enough to participate. The simple fact that you don't think you are good enough is reason enough to join. The only way to get better is to practice, and there is no better way to do that then competitions like this one. It gives you a chance to get honest open opinions on your work and an opportunity to see how others create their pieces and to learn from it.

Since joining this community, I have never taken first place :paper: , but I have improved my skill 1000% :D Each competition I make it my goal to create the best piece of art I can, and I have never been disappointed with that.

So don't sell yourself short, especially when that is your first and so far only post on this forum. Pick a character, start a thread and get to work. :thumb:

Wow this should be an awesome competition. I'm thinkin Deadman, love the zombie/ghost/superhero idea. Though not sure how to portray him. I'm thinkin more zombielike. Sorta gothic twist. little bit of the old fashioned surroundings.

Do you guys think that Guts from the "Berserk" comic is exceptable?

Berserk is my favorite comic of all time... but it's kinda war/fantasy... although it does contain many battles/action sequences.

IAMFear: You don't have to do it digitally , how about with tradtional mediums like oil paints, acrylics or watercolors or even pastels? and then you can scan it into your computer(if you have one) and resize it in Photoshop. Same goes for your Sketches from your sketch book..thumbs, pencil line drawings..inks (all process work) . If you can do it off the computer, all you need is to scan it a nd composite your final pieces in photoshop for presentation and then submit them. Traditional skills still count here. Look at James Gurney(dinotopia) or Alex Ross they work in oils.

One of my teachers is named George Pratt at Ringling..he did a couple of Wolverine issues "Netsuke" a charm that goes on the rope around the obi of a kimono), all in Watercolor and then cropped the pictures and arranged them into panels , and the letterers add the word balloons from there. I was trying to my senior thesis, which was preproduction and one chapter for my graphic novel..and he told me that I was doing it tradtionally and it wasn't working and he taught me how to do the illustrations on a page and compose the with the computer. I was drawing and limiting my pics and myself into too small panels, so now, I do it in the new way . I have Manga studio debut for digital inking and screen tones , but photoshop is great for ease and coloring .

SO the moral of the story is don't limit yorself by saying you, because there's always a way. I draw much better off the computer..because in Photoshop there is not any t-squares, french curves, or even a maul stick to help steady a shaky hand.

Or maybe you can learn to upgrade your comp. And learn the parts and what you need..and it costs less than having to buy a new comp. If you have a friend that's a computer geek even better.

My Aim is to make a superhero wearing a black&white inked mask , make up or tattooed face...don´t know why,but it has some kind of unknow identity and that´s a nice start.
The idea came from the kind of character that i like to know more about on a storyline in comicbooks, always like the anti-hero type,the lone warrior, the "don´t mess with me- hard to knock out" figure...and with no superpowers, just skills.Im choosing one of 3 options...Domino(From X-Force), Crossbones(Marvel universe) & Zartan(from GI Joe).

That seems fine biggest thing with real big redesigns is this, you need to be able to step back and say that is definetly this character or someone else can simply say man thats a cool version of the air bender. If they can't then you have gone to far.

I think it would be wise if you concentrate on one of them in particular and the rest can act as backdrop? Curious to know what Aftermath says about this one though.:D I'm guessing it might be difficult to judge a group versus one character. I have a few questions about how i can arrange my uv´s...my character have lots of weapons; 2 katana swords,2 pistols and a assaltrifle. Do i need to put all of them on the same uvw map for the character or i can made one for each gun?:inocent:

All items/pets/sidekicks/whatever related to your character, and that your character can use, is meant to be in the same sheet (and they also add up for the 10k tri limit!) if I recall correctly.

Static unuseable deco stuff can have as much sheets as they want, as those are part of the pedestal.

I tried to read about that last night..but the only thing I found the comicon site was that Todd "what a suprise he's too busy" McFarlane would not be judging after all. I think it sounds like a juried competition where the jury looks and decides who gets to the final rounds based on the criteria. Then the jury and the guest judge choose and place the finalists.

I would love it if we got to vote for it, at least have some input.

But you can correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe we could extend the scope of this contest to not just being about Comic Books, but more into the spirit of Comicon. A contest where we can make any character(s) from a Comic Book, Videogame, Movie, TV Show, or Toy.

btw, Comiccon is short for Comic Convention, whereas ours is short for Comic Contest. and while it may have started as an awesome gathering of people with common interests, the whole reason the convention started including the rest of the sci-fi and fantasy mediums was to increase the amount of people attending after the organizers realised just how much larger that audience was and just how little else they had to spend their money on. not to sound cynical -or to offend anyone- but i think we can all agree that EA wouldn't be there if there wasn't a profit to be made somehow.

I'd say DEFINITELY don't screw with it. Look what happened with Dominance War this year... no offence to anyone behind the scenes, but I thikn that the lack of focus this year was a huge drawback. Too many possible races to have any continuity to it. I still enjoyed making my character but I felt very separated from many of the other entries. So to start including other aspects of pop culture I think will be detrimental.


Was this even an issue somewhere? Is there even talk about someone changing it for next year? Or is this simply hypothetical?

I had so fun on this challenge and I learnt so much I'd love to see more challenge like this. Comic or not it doesn't matter for me cause I really don't know about comic culture, but for the need of my entry I did some research and I really liked to read more about comic hero mythology.

I think I would never do a superhero in 3D, but thank to this challenge I had fun to do some things I wasn't used too.

I think this Challenge is well established now and if we want to 'bust out' and do different things we should ask for an entirely different Challenge to facilitate that need.

I feel the point of the Comicon challenge is the idea to take a usually drawn character and "redesign" it for either a 3D or 2D medium, which is different than taking an already 3D (game) character or real life (movie) character. I think we'd be better of with a new challenge for these characters, and leaving the comicon challenge as it is

:think: Fanart is a way artists show the appreciation of heroes /heroines, villains, creatures and what not that they have read and collected for many years. It's a contribution to the original artists' work. This year, ie just to see Batman take on all kind of new outfits was rich to me, so I hope Comicon stays as is.:D

Maybe it's because the judges must do battle with each entry in another plane of existence. There are so many fierce opponents... fighting them all could be very tiring.

I understand the hard work the judges need to do, lot´s of amazing entrys this year.It´s a tough job to pick the favorites...i can´t name any,because i have at least 15 favorite entrys,and it´s almost impossible to give a 1st or 2nd...too many fine art pieces.Good luck judges:D
