Hi guys,
I haven't used MAYA for a number of years and am getting back into the swing of things with it again. I have one frustration that I just can't seem to solve...
Could anyone explain how to enable backface culling in MAYA? It's impossible to model when I need to be so careful about not selecting the verts in the back and I haven't been able to successfully make this happen yet.
I'm using the newest version of MAYA for macintosh. Thanks for any help.

You could go to the 'Shading' tab on your viewport and click on the Backface Culling or you could turn off the Two Sided Lighting under the Lighting tab. Any face that's inverted will be shown black. Sometimes, I prefer this one over the Backface culling one because it can be really annoying.

Also if you want to do it on a per object basis you can go to the object attributes (ctrl+a) > render stats and uncheck double-sided. :)

Thanks for the help, but I must not have asked the question right. I tried all the options you gave and they had no effect on what I'm trying to accomplish.
I would like to be able to select things on the front of the model and not have it select all the verts or faces on the back. I'm 99.9% sure that you correctly understood that and gave a correct option, so why is this not having any effect? I have unchecked all those boxes and I'm still selecting the faces on the back of the model.
I'm using the academic version of MAYA for macintosh on a powermac? Is something wrong here? I'm in the perspective viewport and just can't seem to accomplish this simple, basic task. Any more thoughts? Thanks for the help.

In Maya 2009 (should be the same for other versions though):
If you have you model created already, select it and go to:
Display/
Polygons>
Backface Culling
This will set it for that individual object.
If you want it for all new objects that have not been created yet go to:
Window/
Settings&Preferences>
Preferences
Polygons (on left)
Backface Culling (on bottom)
This should set it for all new objects made.
You may have to try both to see how they work together if one doesn't initially work.

In Maya 2009:
Windows>Settings/Preferences>Preferences>Selection>Camera based selection
Just check the checkbox and your set! :approve:

Thank you so much!
This backface culling issue has been driving me CRAZY! I had already reinstalled Maya and read everything I could find. Your second option was the answer. IMPORTANT WARNING: For me at least, once the first object was created, the backface culling could never be changed with your first option (or any other option I found on the internet!). So, the secret was to change the default (the second option) and delete the object and create a new one. Then all seems fine.
