I'm just going to love the semi-hard-edge modeling for this guy.

Which version you plan on doing?

Unfortunately I didn't grow up in the comic book culture so my vision for this character may be a little off from what is expected. I'm doing a "Blaze Runner" futuristic style of Colosus.

I see him as a cigar smoking bad ass who's now just looking out for himself. The version of basing it off is the astonishing Xmen sketchbook. I'm gonna spin off and tie in some ruggedness as well as some elements from older versions of him. My vision may exceed my skills tho.

Best of luck to all and have fun.

Here is the feel I'm aiming for. Obviously the is a lot of Punisher in the mashup and I'm gonna be changing the face completely and that should change the feel away from punisher a lot.

I really wanna try to stick with the Blaze Runner future style if i can.

I put this together in place of the horrible mash up. I'm wondering if I can pull this off with the character face being the only part of him that is still flesh. I have no idea if Colossus has the power to only transform some parts of his body to metal, I've never seen a picture of him like this but I think it could make it original.

Any opinions?

The marvel site and wikipedia agree that he can't change parts of his body. From marvel.com:

"Colossus cannot become partially or selectively armored; his body is either entirely converted, or not at all. Even his eyes become steel-like."

Doesn't mean you can't do it, though. Maybe a flesh colored metal would work?

If you go all silver with him, I'd probably try to warm it up a bit with his costume colors. I dig the color combo in the bottom left with the orange suit contrasting his bluish metal body. Brown might be a good substitute for the orange in keeping with your rugged idea.

I'd revisit him wearing underwear with a trench coat.

I agree the underwear and trench makes him look like and exotic dancer. go for a more mobster feel, try slacks and a vest. still no shirt underneath because you have to show of the shine but i always like it better when colossus wore pants. also I totality like the fedora go for it

I think I'm gonna switch away from the mobster idea and go with something else. I found a nice sketch from the Astonishing X-men Sketch book and did a paint over and I'm feeling this a lot more.

hey woozy

i like your mobster a lot more to be honest. you just need some more time period reference, and dont be scared to cover the body with clothing and just have the face and hands metal.

The front of the face looks good and like you used reference, but the side view seems sorta off.

Your guy kinda reminds me of this old mobster

notice the distance between the ears and the eyes. You have a bit too much distance right now.
You'll also want to pull where the hairline meets the neck in a little bit.
pull the eye into the socket a little more. pull the nostril and cheek back a bit.
pull the sternum out a lot (IE where the neck meets the chest)

on the back view, narrow where the neck meets the hairline a bit. If you tucked it into where the trapezius is now that would be good.

looking good though man... those few tweaks and itll look fantastic

And give him a bigger chin (from the side) I think it should be in front of the upper lip.
It's colossus - he needs to be more masculine - small chin is a turn off

keep up the good work

Cenelder - Thanks a lot man, much appreciated crits, I play around with those tonight.

I'll also mess around with the chin while I'm working on the side profile. See how it looks.

Pretty cool, man. Yeah, my only crit was going to be the chin, his face looks a bit off in the profile view, his cheeks do too.

I updated those things on the side profile.

I really like trying to mix the cartoon feel into realistic characters. The reason why I have the neck like that and the chin(front view) so wide is to try and get this feel for Colossus. I did make some subtle adjustments to those areas. If its not working keep telling me.

looks MUCH better man! you are 90% there!

i just did a really quick paintover of what id still change... its really small tweaks at this point!

essentialy just bringing the back of the head in, lowering the chin a bit, and making the nose a bit more "sculpted hero-ish".

keep at it man. looks great!

One other tip, id save doing the metal-plating until last. That way if you want to change the anatomy itll be really quick to do and you wont have to repaint the lines =D Or are you just doing the metal lines on a seperate layer?

Update!

I really dont have a lot of time to work on this during the week days with real work and the training I do so here is a quick update fleshing out the body. Ill put in the time this week end to try and detail it.

I think I'm leaning more towards a classic version of Colossus in the spirit and ThatDon's Wolverine last year.

Please don't comment on the hands or feet, I haven't touched them at all yet. Would to hear anything else tho!

Nice start buddy ! But I think his legs are too small.
Another things, if I understand well, colossus is made of metal right ? If it's not the case sorry for my poor comic culture . But if it's the case I think It could be cool to sharpen the edges of the muscle a little bit. Right now, it's a little too blobby for me, but it's just my opinion and maybe it's not what you tend to do.

Keep it up !
