3DMini: 3D▲-The Pawn.
Theme:
3DMini: 3D▲-The Pawn.

Hey Guys,
for this Mini Comp, we are going to try something a bit different,
Game Artisans first Macro Mini Comp!
This is a Six part mini, spanning the entire year, taking place every other month. Starting with a Pawn this month, ending with the Final Piece in December.

Brief:
You, as a Game Artisan, will be making your own "Representative" Chess Set, starting with a single piece and adding to your set every OTHER Month.
By "representative", we are not looking for literal chess pieces. Make a character, a vehicle, whatever, as long as it represents what that piece can do and isn't a static object.

This month The challenge is to make a PAWN.
The pawn is the most numerous and (in most circumstances) the weakest piece in the game of chess, representing infantry, or more particularly armed peasants or pikemen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawn_%28chess%29
This is your front line cannon fodder underlings.

Here are the specifics.
Step 1: Choose the THEME of your Chess Set.
You can choose just about anything as long as you can attribute the characteristics of a chess piece to
the Fantasy Archetype of your Chess Set. Again do not make a literal chess piece.
For Example:
THE JUNGLE THEME SET
Pawn= Rat Foot soldier
Rook= Rhino Charger
Knight= Tiger Champion
Bishop= Baboon Shaman
King= Elephant Hierarch
Queen= Lioness Matriarch

Do you get it? The Creatures I chose reflect in some way the Moves of the Chess Pieces they represent.
YOU MUST STICK WITH THE THEME. You can't change your mind in May when Blue Tribal Cat people are no longer in style
(Don't worry, these challenges are self contained, so if you don't finish your pawn, you can still participate in one of the later challenges)

Step 2: Focus on the PAWN for this month's challenge.
If you don't know how to play chess, or don't know what moves the PAWN uses, click the link.

Hopefully at the End of the Year you we will all have a sweet Themed Chess Set.
And a HeavyDuty portfolio Piece.

POINTS TO THINK ABOUT, THESE ARE NOT RULES.
1. You might want to make an informal alliance with your fellow Game Artisans so that you have an opposing set.
For Example:
BoBo: Hey Josh, what chess set you gonna make?
Me: I was gonna make a set based around Vegetarian Angel Hot Chicks.
BoBo: Cool! Then Im gonna make a set based around obese, beefeating, sweaty Demon Dudes.
Me: COOL! ... but you won't finish
BoBo: Oh you!
*high five*

2. For Pieces that have Duplicates, For example PAWNS, Think about adding some Small accessories to make them SLIGHTLY Different. Quick variants are something we do a lot in the game industry. How can I get the most bang for my buck working with a limited budget and time? Examples could be Helmet, weapon Variants, or face/hair, etc...

3. Think about how cool these would be if they were printed out and you could really play with them and Factor that into their construction.

The Specs:

The Specs:
- 6000 tri's *feel free to use less
- 1x1024² Diffuse (Optional:ANY/ALL are permitted :Normal, Spec, Gloss, Glow, Bump.)

Prizes:
1st place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- 1 point towards raising your overall game, elite, and/or master rating
on gameartisans

2nd place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- 1/2 point towards raising your overall game, elite, and/or master
rating on gameartisans

3rd place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- .25 points towards raising your overall game, elite, and/or master rating on gameartisans

Public Voting:
All Winners are chosen through a public voting system. Only GA.org
members may vote.

SUBMIT YOUR FINALS HERE http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/minis/join.html

Soft Deadline: Voting starts Monday Jan. 25th, around 11:59pm! Goodluck!

As always, backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

It's STRONGLY encouraged that you post progress images as replies this thread. We're not forcing everyone to yet, but half of the point of these minis are to help build up the community. If you're posting last minute without at least saying hello, then you're missing all the fun! Stop lurking!

SHOUT OUT TO BoBo FOR THE IDEA!

This is a cool idea! If I weren't so busy with the sprite minis (and a new CGTalk Challenge starting next week) I would love to do this... maybe next one. (Nice use of MrJack's artwork, btw.)

p.s. are those the themes you and Bobo are actually going to do?

This is such a sweet idea comp love it.

**Edit** possibly heading towards a mutant/cyborg-ish route

Is it ok to possibly do rough concepts of the other chess pieces also not just pawn? to make sure we stay consistent with the next chess pieces? or keep it pawn only? though we will only be modeling just the pawn.

Ok, pretty sweet idea Josh!

I'm thinking of going with a "Hell Theme" oh yeah!!

Chess noob question....is the queen the...strongest piece? How many HP does she have? (lol) I'm asking because on the image she's at the end....I thought the King would be the strongest...?
