2d Minicomp: Jack-o-Lantern
2d Minicomp: Jack-o-Lantern

So, Halloween is upon us once again--the time of year when the leaves turn orange and the air is crisp--when we dress up in costume as pirates and as ghosts and as FredH--when we celebrate the macabre, the spooky, and the deadly!

It's also the season when I'd least want to be a pumpkin! Think about it, you pluck a 20 pounder away from its home, bring it home and give it the full dog-and-pony autopsy--slicing off its top--grabbing fistfuls of its innards--scouring the insides clean--making funny faces at the smell and gross sounds you're making as you poke around. Then you stick a candle in it, put it on your doorstep and let it rot for 3 weeks!

My God! What cruelty! Can't there be some more humane way to get our festive jive going without desecrating the sanctity of gourd-like squashes everywhere? Is there no justice in the world!

no, there is no justice in the world

BUT WAIT!

There is something we can do--in today's fast paced, highly digital world, we can use the power of something called the INTERNETS to hold our very own, completely digital, cruelty-free pumpkin carving contest! We can paint our own jack-o-lanterns right in photoshop, or MSPaint, or with our Crayolas and a scanner.

That said,

LETS HOLD OUR OWN JACK-O-LANTERN PAINTING CONTEST RIGHT HERE ON GameArtisans.org!

[color="Sienna"]
For anyone who doesn't know what a Jack-o-lantern is...basically, paint a picture of a carved pumpkin, illuminated by candlelight from within. You don't have to make the jack-o-lantern into a face if you don't want--plenty of cool carved pumpkins are not faces.

Pumpkins everywhere will appreciate the sacrifices we have made for them during this Halloween season.

The Specs:
Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final Jack-o-lantern image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional). The 'final jack-o-lantern' part must be a full color representation--but you do NOT need to draw/paint a background if you don't want. This can be just a pumpkin study, or it can be a full blown illustration!

Please post all work-in-progress shots and questions in this thread!

The Submission

When you have an image you like, follow the instructions on this link:

http://gameartisans.org/contests/min..._painting.html

Don't forget to hit upload!

Public Voting:
All Winners are chosen through a public voting system. Only GA.org
members may vote.

Soft Deadline: Voting starts Sunday, November 2nd, around midnight, EST. Goodluck!

ThatDon dressed up as Fredh

oh, by the way--don't anyone try and submit until after tomorrow night, when the Space BattleShip voting will come to a close. Otherwise, your pumpkin will show up under that contest!

Happy Painting!

Here’s my first sketch of my Mr. Jack with the candle spirit .
I made a photo yesterday of a candle in the dark, I think I will paint the entire image in that atmosphere.

fredh - I think bodies are ok if you want--you certainly don't need them though. But make sure the pumpkin and the carved parts are clear and easy to see

Mogster - I mentioned this in another thread. Red stars have been cropped. Since there is a third mini category on the horizon, the red stars could have potentially broken all the layouts on GameArtisans if people entered too many challenges. So, only the gold, silver and bronze show up in full and each links to the artwork they represent

Chaos51 - nice to see you back. Pretty cool idea there with the pumpkin hat and dress. It's a little hard to tell that she has her behind facing us, but I am sure it's going to be easier to understand once she is all colored up. Show us more!

el flaco - He is already looking great! Really Nice line work

Cold - I wish I was doing that exact pose and had that exact prop right now. Nice start!

Tatarigamy - So far, so good. Is the candle face really needed though? Might be a little distracting from your pumpkin guy. But this might just be me. I am sure it will work out in the end once everything is colored up.
