2d Mini: Wrath of the Death Knights

The new World Of Warcraft expansion is out! As the many WoW players here know, the new expansion introduces a new playing class; The Death Knight! To celebrate this, and all the gorgeous new content to explore in Azeroth, I think it's fitting we unleash our own swarm of Death Knights right here on Game Artisans.org! And what's even cooler than Death Knights? Well, Blizzard has stepped in to OFFICIALLY sponsor this competition, and we're happy to offer first place A FULL FREE YEAR'S SUBSCRIPTION TO WORLD OF WARCRAFT.


The Brief: Wrath of the Death Knights, give us your best painting of a 'Death Knight'. Blizzard describes the Death Knight as follows:

The fearsome death knight, World of Warcraft’s first Hero class, is not your average adventurer seeking to prove his or her worth on Azeroth’s fields of battle. No longer servants of the Lich King, they begin their new calling as experienced, formidable adversaries, heavily armed and armored and possessing an arsenal of deadly and forbidden magic learned in the Lich King’s thrall.


This time around the 2d and 3d minis sync up, thematically. So if you wish you are free to use any concept art produced for the 2d mini for a 3d entry. Additionally, concept artists can grant the use of their concepts to a 3d artist to use in the 3d mini.

The Specs:
Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final Death Knight image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional). The 'final Death Knight' part must be a full color representation--but you do NOT need to draw/paint a background if you don't want.


It's strongly strongly STRONGLY encouraged that you post progress images as replies this thread. We're not forcing everyone to yet, but half of the point of these minis are to help build up the community. If you're posting last minute without at least saying hello, then you're missing all the fun! Stop lurking!

Hi guys, my first time posting here, used to just lurk and submit my comps at the last minute but I figured out that this is how you folks roll, and I think that's pretty cool.

Anyway I just got back from vacation in Kuala lUmpur, Malaysia, and they have an awesome Islamic art museum that has a killer islamic arms and armor gallery. I was excited to start drawings based on that experience so I'm toying with the idea of an Islamic (by way of the Crusades) looking Death knight.

Some sketches here on the helmet and beard studies (beards, very important these.) too, plus playing with calligraphic looking script to represent skulls because Islamic art isn't too keen on the human figure. Not sure if this inlcudes skulls as well, but I figured it'd be fun to play with the design anyway.

but, yes--provided your concept fits into the 3d brief's limits (which require you to base the deathknight on one of wow's races), then yup, you can use the same concept for both minis
