Took some time today and started the UDK-afication of stuff. Alien-ish plants? Mayan artifacts(actually sounds good)? What to put down there? I know there will be a waterfall/water coming from the hole up top along with roots and other things coming through the cracks in the rocks. Some dust particles in the air... maybe a butterfly? But besides that... where to go after those elements are done?

that already looks really good Lamont, can't wait to see it with plant life.
I don't if it's worth the effort since it'd probably be pretty subtle,
but any plants would grow towards the liight as well, so if there's anything bigger than moss, maybe it could lean slightly toward the light as well?

  4. Hey guyz! I am new around so this would be my 1st post.
I found the forum while searching for a good Backing AO tutorial (which I found here at last)
Lamont I love your work I find it very inspiering.
I am not nearly as good as anyone around here but I will try and improve - I basically finished art high and Urbanism University but I love doing 3D and CG and hope someday I'll work in game industry as well.
I am currently working on this guy here...a Zbrush WIP. Needs a head and hands, legs.
Used Zspheres for base mesh - Inflate, Clay and clay tubes for the rest.

Yeah, foliage was the part I was dreading, and I am still not done. There's 2nd and 3rd level plant life detail before I get to the moss. But once it's out the way I can move on to more technical things. Also, plan on messing with the camera animation import for Matinee.

Lamont maybe you could think about separating the floor material from the rock material that you got all over the place to get a bit clear view of the cave POLYPODY looks very nice

Yeah, I plan on doing dirt and moss to define the shapes of things a bit more, but before that I need to make sure I can get the wet look going across a multi-material object, but so far signs point to yes. I'll post a small video when I get the water trickling working. Moss will be excluded from the water effects though.

One thing I really don't know is: How to get a nice looking water droplet animation going. Maybe just have 2~3 frames of impact, then dry up. Loop. Then dance. Or I can just paint a nice rippling tiling pattern, give it a bump offset pumped into the normal channel and a velocity, and apply that to a mask over the affected objects and have it trickle down like that.

More testing. But I am going to ignore it by doing more things I know how to do: moss, plants, dirt and old-mans beard.

For water droplets you can just do a particles in UDK for drops and splash (via Event Generator), and then a different material that got ripples all over it in random or even without it i doubt someone will really notice that

Very true. It will be too fast for people to notice.

Very nice destroyed building. Would make a nice DM map with a few structures on the outskirts and maybe an underground.

Thanks a lot Dan, very cool !! That paint-over is sweet!! Any and all crits/paintovers are welcome!! You're correct in that lighting is going to make or break this thing. And what you've painted is where I am going. Newest UDK has a lightshaft option for lights now, so at least I will not go nuts trying to get rays to look as good as your paint over.

Sometimes it sucks working on something and not having good concept, it helps a lot Dan, thanks again.

(now to spend more time actually concepting...)
