    UV help

I feel incredibly foolish asking this, but I'm having a problem getting a clean unfold on the outer section of the pedestal for my current project. I'm always getting a little stretching on it, and in a perfect world I'd like it to unfold as straight as possible, but it always wants to form a smile. I've been playing with the idea of putting another seam in it to give it two equal pieces. Any help would be great. The part in question is the outer edge of the base.

What are you using to make your UVs? If you're using Headus, here are a couple hotkeys that may help you.

I : tag straight edge - axis aligned
R : if topology allows, snap shell UVs to an axis aligned rectangle

If you're using something else, you may just have to do it manually, using a scale tool on the verts.

I havent tryed this yet but going into Zbrush and using UVMaster and then use that UV map in maya would be really quick. And i know u can align the UVs on the grid to make them strait in Maya.

quickest way is to just to cylindrical map the outer edge! After all its basicaly a cylinder. The top is just a flat plain why make it hard work

I used the cylindrical mapping originally, thinking that would be my best bet, but because it's beveled the way it is makes it stretch unacceptably. I'm using maya's standard UV editor. I'm working on a mac so headus is out of the question, but would be nice . I'll keep attacking it and hopefully wind up with an acceptable outcome. Thanks peoples.
