    TheDarkKnight's Sketchbook

Figured I'd start a Sketchbook / Work in progress thread, hoping to get some feedback.

Currently working on a new character, currently just a bust, but hoping to turn it into a full character soon.

Started polypainting him, and got some eyebrows from pictures, but still needs some work.
Started from a simple base mesh but have retopologized him to put some finer detail into my sculpt.

Retopologized mesh is UV-ed , but I may tweak it a bit for the final low poly mesh, currently might be a little to low-res in some places.

    If he looks familiar, good!

Trying to make an Eminem sculpt :

If you see something that looks really off please share!

    Thanks for lookin

Started work on his body, really rough at the moment and havent tocuhed the lower legs/feet and hands yet, just trying to get the right proportions first.

  3. I think your head looks a bit more like Kevin Spacey than Eminem. The mouth doesn't look right; it looks too wide. The lips aren't curled out enough. The overall shape of the head also looks off. The ratio of the width to the height seems too big. His head is more rounded whereas yours is slender. The upper bridge of the nose is too wide and too squared. Also, the bridge should go deeper into the face, there's a very gradual slope in your model that makes the sinus area look puffy. The mouth creases are far too pronounced. The transition from the temple to the cheek bone should be lower. He has no wrinkles under his eyes. The brow ridge is too wide. You can see in the photo that his brow doesn't protrude from the side like in the model. The chin should be more narrow. Eminem has some child-like features in his face and yours is more masculine and squared.

I apologize if my comments seem a bit scattered or random. I just jotted them down as I noticed them.

Started doing some work on the clothing.

Lots of work left to be done as you can see, slowly getting there.
Using this as ref of what I want to make out of it :

  5. I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw Kevin Spacey in that face.

Nude sculpt looks like he has a really long torso, but it looks a lot better with the clothes. Not sure if you changed it or if the clothes just make it look better.

Don't think I've changed anything to the torso size from that pic, could be wrong though.

Did a quick test bake with the polypaint to see how it looked on my low poly, bake came out quite good IMO.

Still need to finish the hair on the face, and am considering giving him a different outfit, can't really get the leather look on the jacket I want.

with the holidays ver I have time to work on this guy again, decided on a new outfit (again)
Did some hard surface modelling, and am kinda figuring out how I want to do the hoodie/vest, base shouldn't prove much of a problem the hood on the other hand might.

Also did a paintover to show where I want to take it

Signed up for the High-end Fantasy Game Art Creation by Katon Callaway workshop over at CGSociety.org , starting february 21.
Wanted to try and up my facial sculpting skills before that, so did a quick headsculpt:

Was hoping someone could take a look at it, to see if something looked really off?
(don't mind the ears, didn't touch them)

everything looks pretty much right on the face, the only thing that maybe is a bit off would be his chin maybe a bit big, but that depends on your refrence

Looks good. Although the eyelids seem to have more wrinkles in comparison to the rest of the face's skin. When you look at the eyes you'd see an old man, while the rest of the face is quite young-ish. Try smoothing it out or add some wrinkles in the outer corner of the eyes, forhead, and to balance that contrast probably add some on the cheek and lips.
I'm no anatomical pro but I thought I'd give my suggestion

    Revise

Looking amazing so far bro. There are a few problems I have with the anatomy though and since you're kind of getting the GA treatment (replies only if your stuff doesn't need critiques or looks over 9000x amazing) I thought I'd try to help end that.

Take my opinions with a grain of salt, I'm just trying to plant a small seed that you can have to research more on the topics I present:

    1) his crotch is a bit low. Generally the crotch hits at the halfway point (4 heads for a normal human body, I think its 3.5 for a woman).
    2) his shoulders might be a smidge high, I tried to use the reference from his center point since its at an angle.
    3) His fingers need to be pressed a bit. A finger is generally thicker width-wise.
    4) I know he will probably wear boots, but I think you should go for sculpting his foot anyway, as it never hurts to get the practice in!

GREAT WORK THOUGH! I certainly am not at this level just yet.

p.s. Sorry if people take offense to my "GA treatment" post, but we talked about it in another thread for 10+ pages and there seems to be little to no change. Call me a cynic.

    Thanks alot!
That's the kind of feedback I really appreciate.

I know about the anatomy issues, tried to fix that somewhat in later updates, the image you used in your paintover (which I really appreciate) was before I went in and did some tuning to proportions and everything.

Here is what he currently looks like :

Hands are still something I have trouble with, might try and do some studies of them before my course start to get a bit more familiar with those (kind of like I did with the face for awhile)

    Thanks again for the feedback!

Finally bought a Marmoset license along with a new videocard, so went back to my Comicon entry and redid the Marmoset part, pretty happy with it, looking forward to putting my current project in there

Decided to try and sculpt one head a day, in about a hour, give or take, to try and improve my general sculpting skill + speed.

Did this one just now, and although I don't dislike it, something about it feels kind of off?
Was hoping somewhere here could take a quick look at it?

Ok been about a year since posting on here, way to long
Figured it was about time I updated this thread again.

Never got around to finishing that Eminem I was working on on the top of this page, and didn't like it enough to finish it, so just redid it.
Trying to get an idea of how much I improved since doing that sculpt.

This is the current state of the model, lowpoly build and everything baked down.
Only thing I put some actual work in are the jeans which I textured from scratch (no photo's all hand made), the eyes, the shoes and a start of the specular on the jacket.

Having some trouble getting the hair right but hope to get that fixed soon, if you have an idea, please share

Picked up an AnatomyTools.com figure, so time for some anatomy studies.
