    Soldier WIP

The guy I'm currently working on (now Dominance War is over) is an African-American US soldier in full desert-combat gear.

I actually modeled and textured a version of this character just over 8 months ago, however due to lack of references I ended up making lots of mistakes with anatomy/proportion and wasn't very familiar with zbrush to boot. So I'm redoing it and am going to focus on all that stuff this time around and with more detail.

Currently on the base mesh - still quite a bit to go on the upper body. The head is from the old mesh.. just using it as a placeholder for now.
Any and all feedback is welcome

    Current Update:
    Finished.

    Sunday night update:

Not much progress this week.. although the base mesh is almost done now. Should be able to finish it off this week and then refine the head and helmet.

Just gotta do the ammo pockets and a pistol holster (the pistol I'll do in zBrush)

head looks a bit big and the crotch of the pants seems a bit low. Looks pretty good so far, keep it up.

Thanks for the feedback Yeah the head has some issues I need to get on, just the general proportions with the neck and the facial feature shapes. Will also look into the crotch thing

i think the proportions and size of his head make him look quite child like, but it looks to be improving as you iterate, so just keep going. Just try and look at some reference, and adjust his anatomy accordingly

Sounds like your working on the proportions but I did a quick paint over that may help.

    Main adjustments:
    Shoulder a bit less curved
    Hips widened
    Head slightly bigger
legs and arms a bit thicker

Thanks so much for the paintover mate. Very much appreciated.. just wish I'd read this post sooner today! But will work on your suggestions this week

Still doing the form - only really had a few hours during the week and sunday night:

Bulked up the legs and upper-body, also sculpted out the lips and sharpened up the face a bit more as I found it was too flat before. It's getting there..

  13. Nice work Jack. The edges are looking a little soft and undefined though. Looking forward to seeing your next update.

Thanks Adam The good thing about this helmet now is that the goggles are now a separate object (as opposed to them being attached previously) so when I start working on them this weekend it's gonna be way easier.

Looking forward to getting well stuck into this character now.

    Alright, so body update:

Lots of fixes, and quite a few detail passes. Some of the smaller objects on him are now just about finished. Currently just blocked out the folds in his clothing (at a lower division than shown here) and will work on those more tomorrow.

Still quite a bit to do but after today's work I can look at this and see an actual human person instead of just a bunch of polygons that roughly resemble one, which is a VERY good feeling.

    Any feedback would be awesome
Goal is to have this guy 100% done by the end of the year, so aiming to get this sculpt done before the end of the month.

I did some good work on this over the weekend, however there have been some problems with zBrush I'm trying to work out how to solve - if I can't work them out I'll probably have to redo most of the weekend's work unfortunately. -_- Hopefully it's some rookie mistake that I can easily get a solution to/learn not to do whatever I did wrong again.

I posted the problem to zBrush Central but in case you guys have any ideas here's what I said:
Basically whenever I'm working on a large project (for example my current one which is ~600mb), at the end of my session I save out a .zpr file. Usually I might save a few copies in case one corrupts or whatever.
Then when I go to load it back up, I open the project file..... and nothing appears on screen. If I try to drag on the screen I'm just drawing the default 2.5d squares.
I have a bunch of tools available on the tools menu but none of them are the tool I was actually working on - in other words the tool that was active when I saved the project is just.. gone.

The project file size hasn't changed so I assume the data is still there but I just can't see it.

Any help is appreciated. Currently using zBrush 4R2. Anything other info needed just say
Anyways in the meantime - started the sidearm: Beretta M9... blocking it out currently.

    Finished the pistol.

Not perfect but for my first hard surface "object" I'll take it. Back to the character now, been working on it this week more as well and will hopefully get it near done this weekend.

No I'm not dead. It's been a busy last few months but nearly there now.

Still some texturing to go and I'm probably going to have to revise the face a bit. The eyes seem too big.
