Name a game that was so good you beat more then once.

I know with our busy schedules its hard to play games on our free time. So for us to have a second run with a game must say something about the game itself. Name a game you have played and beaten but thought it was so good you just had to play again. Would like to know what people think.

    Me personally.

    Killzone 2
    Final Fantasy 7
    Final Fantasy Crisis Core
    Duke Nukem
    Half Life
    Doom
    Gears of War 2
    Halo 1.2.3

Thats all I can think about right now..

Well I'll start with Games that dont really have a story. That I'll play a campaign every now and then but not always finish them too "completion" I think I've won and don't want to mop up, or get bored of the current scenario and start a new game. And Im going to include games Ive sunk 100+ hours into this catagory for Multiplayer

The Total War series - (what I currently work on) 100+ hours per game
Civilisation Series (including the colonisation games)- 100+ hours per game sank into them too.
    Football Manager
    Team Fortress 2
    Counter strike (including Source)
    Battlefield 1942 and BF 2

And Now games with clearer start and end points...

Fallout 1 and 2 the isometric one's... amazing replayability.
    Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
    Diablo 1 and 2
    Final Fantasy 7
    Res Evil 2
Advanced Wars Series (the campaign side I usually play through 3-4 times each)
    Assassins Creed 2
    Company of heroes (SP campaigns)
    Saints Row 2
    Portal
    Left 4 Dead 1 and 2

I'll split the N64 into it's own catagory

    Mario 64
    Goldeneye
    Jet Force Gemeni
    Perfect Dark
    Zelda Ocarina of time
    Zelda Majoras Mask
    Rogue Squadron
    WWE No Mercy (Story Tree)
    Banjo and Kazooie
    Diddy Kong Racing (Story)
    Turok
    Blast Corps

Im sure theres more... and I'll edit some in.

a few that were mentioned here I won't repeat, such as morrowind oblivion metroid etc. One game in particular hasn't been mentioned and I think I've beaten it 3 times, is Digimon World 1 for the PSX...the replay value was intense, because you would always get a different monster each time, depending on if you had the strategy guide or not ...there are STILL things that are a mystery about that game to this day!

I've finished a LOT of games more than once. Lemme separate them by platform. Don't know how many I'll remember off the top of my head, but we'll see.

    Arcade & C64
(Some of these games, the best you can do each time is max the score. No real endings.)
    - Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man
    - Pitfall
    - Zaxxon
    - Defender
    - Centipede
    - Chimera
    - X-Men Madness in Murderworld
    - Gauntlet
    - Dragon's Lair
    - Aztec Challenge

    - Unreal 1 & 2

    - Sorcerer's Appliance 1-3 (Sort of like Leisure Suite Larry)

    NES
    - Metroid
    - Batman
    - Super Mario Bros
    - Maniac Mansion (with a few exceptions, better than the PC version)
    - Uncanny X-Men (One of the worst games ever, but I was a kid and didn't care.)

    - Metal Gear
    - Elevator Action

    - Super Mario 64
    - Castlevania 64

    GameCube
    - Metroid Prime
    - Animal Crossing (not exactly a game you can beat, but I played every day for maybe 2 years.)
    - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
    - Super Mario Sunshine
    - Luigi's Mansion
    - X-Men Legends I & II (More fun, imo than Ultimate Alliance)
    - SSX Tricky
    - Aggressive Inline

    - Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2

    - Robocop
    - Final Fantasy Legend 1-3 (Actually SaGa 1-3 in Japan. Great games btw)
    - Final Fantasy Adventure (Actually the first Mana game in Japan)
    - Tetris (Not sure you can "beat" it, but I did pass 500 or 600 lines. Hardest console version of Tetris btw.)

I still buy newer games, but I think that a lot of them aren't worth multiple plays.

Dang. Forget to include some of the Lynx, Jaguar, & GameGear games I've played through a bazillion times. Stuff like Shinobi, Sonic, California Games, AvP, Cybermorph, and so on.

I've finished so many games multiple times, but I must have beaten Sonic 3 and Knuckles probably hundreds of times, if not way more than that. I mean I have that damn game on pretty much every console I own, but I can't help it. It doesn't take very long to beat and its my fave game. I usually start with a run through of it as Knuckles and sometimes play as Sonic afterwards, but most of them are with Knuckles.

So. Yeah, thats my most notable one anyway because of the sheer number of times I've beaten it.

There is a difference I think between old games that were meant to be finished basically every sitting and the longer ones like modern games and old games with save slots that would take several days to a week to finish each time. Replaying those longer ones means a serious commitment. There are a few that I played all the way through more than once back in the 16 bit days, but these are ones that I finished like a bajillion times:

    Sonic 2
    Wonderboy
    Wonderboy in Monsterland
    Golden Axe!!
    Psycho Fox
    Midnight Resistance
    Ghouls & Ghosts
    Thunder Force IV

For longer games and modern games I think I've only played these more than once all the way through:

    Demon's Souls
    Ico
    Resident Evil 4
    Phantasy Star
    Ultima IV and VI

Sort of. That may have been true of old school arcade-style games that relied on scores. However, other genres of games generally took much longer than a single setting. PC games have just about always had save capability. C64 games too. Solid state memory costing what it did, console games would use complicated password save systems instead.

I think that many modern games tend to be less replayable only because there's less value added content. There's less reason to play a game again. DLC and multiplayer both add to replay value, but the replayable single player experience isn't always what it should be with modern games. Increased difficulty helps, but not always. To make matters worse, as the emphasis has been put on visuals, the typical single player experience has also gotten much shorter.

Nowadays, you're lucky to get 8 hours out of a game. In many older games, if a game was shorter than 30 hours, you'd consider yourself shortchanged. Granted, this varies from genre to genre, but newer games do tend to be shorter when compared to their old school equivalents. This is a charge that has been levied time and time again.

Even when a modern game is long, there's rarely ever any reason to revisit it. I think that anybody who has played "Skies of Arcadia", "Final Fantasy VI", or "Maniac Mansion" knows exactly how good the single player experience can be. Skies easily offered 75-100 hours of gameplay, not including time required to beat every bonus mission. FF6 could be finished in a more reasonable time, but you could easily replay it again to find hidden storylines, characters, and other such bonuses. The joy of MM wasn't how quirky and bizarre the story was, but how certain combinations of characters could lead to totally different play experiences and multiple endings.

Some games, because they're so costly to produce, simply don't provide the expansive experience that older, "uglier" games did. I can never imagine myself replaying Final Fantasy 13 the same way I did Final Fantasy 6. Newer games tend to prioritize looks over gameplay. Not all, but many. I'll take an ugly, highly replayable game any day of the week.

The first time is the hardest. Plus since FF was a totally new franchise, it did some stuff we've never seen before as gamers. You just didn't know what tactics worked best. On the second go around, you realized which spells best countered what enemies, what dangers hid where, and the importance of level grinding.
