    Batman Beyond - WiP

Hey everyone been wanting to do my own real time character for awhile now but I never seem to find some time, anyway some time cleared up on my schedule so I can finally start. I wanted to choose something some what simple so I did up a quik concept, The concept will prolly change a bit when I start sculpting. Anyway this is what I have so far. The base mesh shown here is merely for sculpting the high res version and to insure I'll have enough geometry where I need it, the final low res version will be around 8000 tris, and I'll be using 1 2048 map. Critiques Please!

    early concept

base mesh, original mesh is from Zbrush 3.1 super average man, posed and redefined the form a little, then I brought it into maya where I retopoligized the mesh. For example I fixed the head, arms, hands totally redone, shoulders and chest areas as well as the feet, just so it's a little bit cleaner for when it comes to sub divide my mesh. Also the belt and back wings aren't added yet, I'm first going to get the overall form finalized then I'll be adding that stuff. Not too sure how I'm going to do the wings yet but that I mean how to incorporate them into his suit so that it looks cool. Smae with the eyes because it seems like he wont actually have eye balls because his mask seems to completely cover his face, so ya I'm still pondering his cowl as well. anyway critiques very welcome

    The concept looks amazing.
The base looks great aswell. His forearms are too wide :P but thats ok if its a base i guess :P

Only thing id like to give a heads up on, is that circle loop on the thigh whcih terminates the edge loop coming from the torso. It will cause NASTY pinching/uneven surface when subdivided. Know that it shouldnt, but it did(speaking from experience). Believe me and youll thank me later

Hey thanks for the crits, ya I'm gonna take care of that thigh area theres a few other areas like that, that need attention. I should have another cleaner base posted very shortly.

    New Base Mesh

Here's my new base mesh, I tired to clean it up as much as possible so that I wouldn't have any pinching problems when I get into ZBrush, also I like to make sure that the geometry is evenly spaced so that when it subdivides it's does it evenly. I should be ok now.

I'm trying to keep the model very simple and clean which actually isn't to difficult considering there isn't much to the outfit and his gear. His belt and other stuff added to him isn't fianlized, there just for reference for sculpting purposes, none of that stuff will be zbrushed probably, considering it's all hardsurface junk, I like to do that stuff in maya later.

Those pod things on his back will house his wings that will kinda eject and contract when he uses them. In the cartoon they kinda just pop out of nowhere so I just made something that would maybe kinda make sense, again I didnt want to do anything to crazy I want the model very simple, What I want to shine threw is the suits Normal and textures later, not geometry.

    Anywho crits very welcome, cheers

    Zbrush First pass on head

First Zbrush pass on the head, trying to figure out surface forms and seam lines for the suit, as you can see the concept is straying a little bit but I'm trying to stay true to it as much as possible, It's just sometimes what looks cool 2d isn't kool enough sometimes for 3d, it jsut needs a bit more. Also at this point I’m not too sure how I want to do the mouth area, because the suit has to have a cut off point somewhere, I can’t really have it go right in the mouth like on the cartoon, just wouldn’t make much sense, In my opinion anyway, any ideas anyone?. So ya working on that, and more detail to come, this is just the first pass. Critiques please

Thanks Wim and Chris, as for the wings I think I'm going to have to agree with you on that, what I'll probably do is 2 finals one with the wings open and one with them put away, that way it'll give you an idea of where I was gonna go with it. Any ideas on the mouth area, like should I maybe just cut it off at the upper lip area or should I just let it flow into the mouth or maybe even half way into the lip so it incases part of his lip. I'm kinda thinkin since it is a futuristic suit that maybe it adhears to his skin and kinda binds with it to increase his strength and such, kinda like the venom suit maybe, but obviously not a living suit. I don't know just an idea, lol

    Quick Update

here's a quick update on my model that I did this mourning, trying to get the forms flowing nice, I want alot of nice rythm and smooth lines, before I start to add all the crazy detail. I'm not going for an insane muscle definition look, considering he is a teenager I want to keep it simple, plus he is wearing a suit so you shouldnt really see to much muscle def, actually I might even tone down the muscle structure... maybe lol, personally I'm pretty satisfied with it. Crits please. cheers

He's looking really good, however something seems odd about the ribcage(I'm thinking that it sticks out to far from the abs.)

Ya thats area does look a little twiggy, I'll smooth some of that out, what I wanna do is add some of that nice sharp line work that the head has on various areas of the body of the suit, the rib cage seemed like one of those areas where a nice edge would look cool, thanks for the crit AP Twin.

  14. This idea is starting really well. I have always liked the batman beyond character it was a good series. The only things that look strange to me are that his chin seems too long, I would have ended it at the top of the ¨circle¨ details on the chin armour. The arms seem a little too thick compared to the rest of the body which is a slimmer build. I'm looking forward to seeing this character finished.

Hey thanks for the comments Antodonnell, I love it when people crit my work because they can see stuff that i can't really see sometimes, the chin area is an excellent example of this, thanks bud. I'm def gonna rework that quick. As for the arms ya they do look a little off, what I'm gonna do is thin his whole body structure out slightly, the arms will be brought down as well to match his new physique. Because I want his build to resemble the cartoon version more, and it just isn't doin that right now, he's fairly thin in the show, so ya working on that next. New update tommorrow. cheers
