    Comicon'16 | 2D | Squirrel Girl the Dullahan

I was originally doing A Black Panther as a Wight, but given a bit of a gap in my work for various reasons, I've decided to start afresh with Squirrel Girl the Dullahan!

    ORIGINAL ENTRY

Decided to go a little less esoteric than I have in the past and actually have a character who has appeared on film - albeit only just.

The vague gist of my idea is Black Panther reanimated as a Wakandan equivelant of a Barrow-wight esque creature, guarding over precious vibranium treasures for all time and killing those who would steal it.

To start off with a few various Black Panther costumes from various eras. Realistically, the starting point of all of them is pretty similar - all over black suit with some kind of short ears on the head. However, the detailing has a fairly reasonable range in it that could go a number of ways - I would say I normally prefer the silver detailing over the gold (in the ones that are present) BUT within the concept of my ceremonially ressurected undead guardian type, it could potentially work if used correctly. As it stands I'm leaning away from the mini-cape and big collar but again, I may re-evaluate that.

I love the passion you have. Marvel characters are quite a challenge and yours being one, I wish you nothing less of a great time and lots of luck!
    Thanks

Started doing some very rough sketches for the face - which given he has a full face mask means a bit more design work than usual in combination with the undead theme to actually get that across.

Started to combine some of the features I like from the sketches - going for a very lean/withered and predatory look.

Pushed forward with this design a bit - I do feel that the trick to this will be the texturing of the black - the downside of picking what is traditionally a very flat coloured costume! But giving a wrapped look serves the twin purposes of giving detail and a slight impression of Mummification.

Just a bit more prodding - changed the eyes to glowing sockets rather than the normal mask showing through, which I think works a little better and tried out some detailing on the arms. I think next I'll probably move onto trying to come up with a composition. My aim is going to be to try and aim for something that feels Frank Frazetta-ish - it's very much that dramatic monster in the dark tomb thing I'm aiming for conceptually.

A few bits of Frazetta ref of the sort I'm aiming for (with a bit of censoring for keeping it family friendly forum suitable).

I'm probably aiming for something composition-ally most resembling the bear one but trying to get in the pillars and smoke from the others for some nice dramatic lighting

Started converting that first picture into my piece using ideas from those Frazetta pics.

However, what I'm strongly feeling here is that the skull-face design isn't working - it doesn't have the contrast against the white smoke it should have to bring it into being a focal point, but more importantly, I'm not getting a Black Panther feel from the overall design right now, which is obviously not a good thing.

I think I need to take the design back to a much more subtle skull marking on it rather than being a literal skull, and that should allow me to also get those ears into the design in a more notable way (and they are after all about the single defining feature of the costume).

A bit of updating - a new mask based more on the movie one, switched the claws to upward to be a bit more aggressive and various other little bits and bobs to bring it more towards something more threatening. I think what will be next to change is the fur ruff - it adds bulk to the frame which makes him less skeletal/obviously undead. I'm vaguely considering some draped leopard skin, but I'll have a play around with it and see what works.

A bit of updating - changed the posture a bit - really it's the face that I need to work on at the minute I think - the problem with the full face mask is its not expressive, so need to do something with it to make the undead thing more obvious again.

Also - quick test - the idea original idea was it would be vibranium treasure, but silver just doesn't look as "treasurey" so tried a quick colour swap with gold just to getthe impression. Thoughts?

Oh, I love the concept of this. As you said earlier, the real challenge lies in the detailing. I think the gold goes better with the treasure idea if it's done well.
    Thanks

As I had to take a bit of a break from this project due to a couple of fairly large other commissions, I've decided to start again with a new pitch, so I give you....

A bit more work gone in, though I've temporarily removed the head just to try and get everything else under control. I'd forgotten how hard it is to get a character look right when riding something though, so need to do something with that. May also need to play around with the colour of the flames as well, an eerie green seems like it might fit a bit better, and be a bit less Ghost Rider-y.

Ah no! Was looking forward to updates from the previous project! This has turned out quite well, though. Are you putting the head back?
