freakmean -- I know it's not the most ideal of situations, but we did our best to fix things up as much we could.

None of the entires really stand out to me in this mini, except for Maph who's the only one who's nailed the "disgustingly fat" part in the execution without just looking like a rubber suit, or gassy bloatyness, even though the presentation isn't very exciting.

That said, I didn't even compete myself, and haven't even posted a helpful comment during the mini, so the only real failure was me

Woah now East, why don't you step off that high horse of yours and come play with us on the playing field before discrediting everyone Else's work.

The topic was very subjective and while you may think many of the entries didn't hit the mark someone else could easily think they were right on the money, Like myself.

    Good Job Everyone.

Woah now East, why don't you step off that high horse of yours and come play with us on the playing field before discrediting everyone Else's work.
I'm going to disagree a bit, ThatDon. I'll tell you why.

Having read East's post in full, I can easily see how you or others might express concern or even outrage. Given the usually light & fluffy nature of these threads, I can see how one might feel that East's comment is a bit of a downer.

I'm addressing this here, instead of privately, for one big reason:

In communities such as this, opinions are like nuggets of gold. Seriously. You treasure each and every one of them.

Apparently, he feels that only one member truly "nailed" the topic as described in the brief. It may not be the popular thing to say. I know. However, he certainly has the right. That's the wonderful thing about free speech. Not every comment has to be happy, sunny, or shiny.

The way I see it, as long as people are respectful and don't t outright insult their fellow members, I think that they're well within their rights to be honest - within reason.

State that you feel "x" and say "z" to explain why you feel it. You know what I'd call that? I'd call that a critique. Isn't that the point of forums like this?

Again, I say this for one reason only. It's not to single out East. It's not to change the mood of this thread. It's to remind you why we're all here. This board is not just about hanging out. It's not just about finding cool things to model. It's about personal and professional growth. We don't grow in spite of harsh criticism. We grow because of it.

    Treasure the critiques, y'all. Seriously.

BTW: Just because he didn't enter doesn't mean that he's not entitled to an opinion.

I'm all for good honest feedback, but I didn't see any critiques posted by East, only "None of the entires really stand out to me in this mini" which is a insult to all of those that finished in my book.

Read his post again. It's not an in-depth analysis. He doesn't necessarily bullet point everything. However, he clearly states that, even though he wasn't a big fan of maph's entry, it was the only one (to him) that didn't feel rubbery or bloated. That's a critique. "I don't like 'x" and this is why."

None of the entires really stand out to me in this mini, except for Maph who's the only one who's nailed the "disgustingly fat" part in the execution without just looking like a rubber suit, or gassy bloatyness, even though the presentation isn't very exciting.
Again, it's not a PhD thesis, but it's a critique nonetheless.

Simply because somebody is offended doesn't make something offensive. East's post may not have been an in-depth analysis, but it was certainly a valid set of opinions. If people don't like hearing that somebody doesn't like their work then they should just quit now.

Honesty and truth are not the same thing. Just because East was being honest doesn't mean that he was telling a universal truth. You can't have freedom of speech for one, but not for all.

You don't have to like his opinion. You simply have to respect his right to express it. You can't invite honest opinions only when they're convenient to do so. If you simply want to hear "good job" or "ataboy" garbage then maybe everybody should just pat themselves on their back. There are too many boards out there where people get stroked. That's part of why there's so much crappy art out there.

I'm not saying that East is right. I'm not saying that he's wrong. Frankly, I couldn't give a monkey's butt either way. He has a right to speak his mind.

Fred works his ass off to keep this board running and to make it the success that it is. No question about that whatsoever. Fred is THE man. Hands down. Is his end goal to create the forum version of creative masturbation? Probably not. The idea here is COMMUNITY. Like it or not, critique is a part of the process.

East wasn't being an ass. He was being honest. He said what he felt and said why. Don't want to agree with him? Don't.

Want to send the wrong message? Kill his post. That'll surely keep other people from saying "boo"... ever. You'll send the message that ego stroking is where it's at and that everybody else can eat it.

If this board is going to turn into one of "those" sort of places, where only self-congratulatory posts are allowed, I'm not sure I need to be here anymore.

If someone doesnt tell me my models suck or my textures suck then when i get out and apply for a job i would be seeing through a pipe dream because i thought i was good but really i wasnt. Im rambling again, this is really none of my biz and i didnt even compete. Don & Rob you both are great guys and mods im sure you to will see this out. Rob don't leave!

    Great entrys everyone!
Not saying I'm leaving. Don't get me wrong. Just saying that I don't want to be part of an experience where everything is, as you say, "sugar coated."

The problem with the internet is that you can't convey the subtleties of language with any sort of accuracy. Some people would find his post to be offensive. No doubt about it. However, as I said, just because you're offended doesn't mean that something is offensive.

The only bad post is the one that offers nothing of any value. For me at least, East had something of value to say. Would I have appreciated it if his post had been more in-depth? Definitely. It wasn't though. Gotta take what you get.

EDIT>>> ANYWAY..... For my part, I've said my bit - for what that's worth. I'll leave it at that.
Let's not let this spirited debate taint the accomplishments of the entrants.
Congrats to those who did enter. Kudos to those who tried. I encourage all of you to move ever onward and upward.

    Cheers,

I know, I know. I got a bit lazy there I'm afraid. A lack of time, my birthday, etc... those were all not very productive situations I noticed.

I think it's all good to get a bit of banter on the go. I see what East is getting at. He obviously has particular tastes when it comes to his fatties. It's normal when you like a bit of meat on the bone.

I came into this under the impression of it being a sketch sculpt challenge....Had i know i should spend more than 4 hours on it, i would have spent the time. My fault on not reading. I make no claims that my entry is amazing, or polished piece of cleverly concepted art. Next round tho, I wont pussy foot around =) just for you east, just for you.

I suspect most people should understand the limitations involved with a short fun after-hours challenge like this. For me i found it to be jovial and relaxed and ummm I dont find a blanket criticism very constructive. In fact I don't think anyone would get anything from it.

I'm looking forward to the next challenge though, the format, themes, and community are pretty good here.
