Cool composition thus far, be a little careful about jumping the gun on details so early on. Remember to work shapes/values large and chisel down to smaller forms to ensure everything reads nicely.

Hey guys, thanks for the crits and comments, much appreciated! So, my thinking for the hockey stick sword was that over this land this soldier-ey faun comes from (specifically over the main city's Roman style arena) is a portal that occasionally opens and dumps random items from other planets/dimensions/worlds. This portal is believed by them to be a doorway from the heavens, and the items that drop from it are divine gifts to whoever receives them. During a tournament of sport this guy was competing in, the portal dropped several items, including this half of a hockey stick which landed directly in front of him.

The athletes in the arena at the time were deemed to have been chosen, and so his "holy hockey stick" (now with a blade strapped to it), has become his main weapon of choice. However, the stick wasn't the only thing he received from the portal. This time, along with the various other items, a giant crystal (the size of a large tree) fell through to the ground as well. While everyone watched and tried to figure out what this new object was, VenDerius approached and when nothing happened he reached out to touch it. Immediately his hand began to shift and morph, affecting farther and farther up his arm until he was finally able to wrench it away. His entire forearm had become solid crystal - a magical artifact that could be wielded against even the strongest enemies.

So that's my basic idea, it may change as I go, but that's my thinking/reasoning at the moment. He's gonna be blasting the baddie off to the right, so we should see the magic pretty clearly.

Wow, thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys! I do indeed need to keep working on doing big details before I move on to smaller stuff, it's a habit I am indeed working to break As for the crystal hand, it will indeed be in the final, I just haven't had a chance to get it painted in yet, no worries! As for closet Canadian, I'm not from there, but I've been there 2x, so maybe Canada Hockey Fever slipped into my brain by osmosis eh?

And now, another quick update - playing with some colors and blowing snow!

I like your composition for your character, it's coming along nicely. It would be nice to see multiple color thumbnails of what you intend to do with full color I feel cold when I look at the snow, good job. lol

Hey man ...I know it's a little late, but it's good to see you in the competition this year...looks good...just a suggestion if you moved that sun over to the right a little more it would help with the direction of your composition...and imo i would raise the rock/ground plane on the bottom left up just a bit so it doesn't shoot off down in the corner....and also soften up the contrast so it's not so contrasty down in the bottom left b/c it can act like an arrow pointing down and to the left...keep up the good work
