How do you bounce back from a bad day? By soaking my bones in the bathtub listening to easygoing light music

What's a good day? Opening my eyes in the morning and enjoying another day above ground I guess

Let's start at the beginning, how did you
become an artist?

I’ve been drawing ever since I was a kid and the moment I picked up a pencil I knew I had found my passion in life. As a matter of fact the first drawing I made that I can remember was Popeye, hahaha, right then and there I became an artist! Even though I’m largely self-taught I took some classes here and there throughout my life picking up what I could, then as I got older I took collage courses in illustration and cartooning. My initial goal at the time was to become a comic book artist and when that didn’t work out I was in search for other means to express my self. There was a four-year gap when I didn’t do any art and had lost the love for it, but then I discovered the 3d game art field. After doing some research and finding a few terrific forums I thought to myself I could do this. With my love of gaming and determination I improved to become a professional 3d artist.

How in the world do you come up with your ideas? Background? TV? Games? Visions
from the spirit world? Where?

All of the above really hehe, I’m inspired by all of the cool things life has to offer. Of course more specifically I have a wall full of movies and books to draw inspiration from and I reference them frequently. It’s rather difficult for a creator to truly make something original these days and I find myself pulling from all of these resources hoping that I can bring something new to the table.

Is the competition subject and specs important to you, or do you simply enter to
express yourself?

For the most part I would enter to express myself despite the subject matter, even if the competition theme didn’t quite appeal to me I’d enter just to try something new. To be honest I would be sitting at home making models or drawing in my spare time anyway, so when the competitions come around it serves as a public forum to share my art with my peers.

What inspires you to create and how do you keep motivated when things get tough or
when you are feeling down?

My creativity is always present and I’m constantly brainstorming new ideas. With that said it adds fuel to the fire for me to do some art every day, even if it’s for a few minutes after work. When I’m having a bad day or life’s kicking me in the butt I think back to when I was on the outside looking in with a mailbox full of rejection letters! I then smile and tell myself things could be worse, after that I go about my business and daydream some more.

What is the most exciting and rewarding part about being a 3d Game artist?

The most exciting thing is when you see your creation on the screen being enjoyed by other people! The most rewarding aspect has to be working with other talented individuals in creating something from the ground up, there’s no greater joy in knowing that you were able to contribute to a project.

If you have any warnings on what not to do in art, or what to be careful for, what
would they be?

I’d say the biggest thing is not to lie to your self. This means knowing what your strengths and weakness are and working towards improving in those areas. The next piece of advice would be to embrace criticism! This is the one thing most armature and even some professional artists have a hard time dealing with but if you keep your mouth shut and eyes and ears open it can help you improve leaps and bounds!

What would be your advice for aspiring 3d artists out there?

Repetition is boring but necessary to improve! Never ever stop practicing and always tell yourself, “It’s not a question of if I’ll make it but when”! Despite the bad times as an artist you have to believe in yourself because if you don’t then no one else will. The one silver lining is that eventually through hard work and determination you will improve to where your talents will be recognized and appreciated.

Was there someone, or some thing that helped make you who you are today and is there
someone who you would like to thank, or at least give a shout to?

My Grandmother helped make me who I am today, by always believing in me and giving me the encouragement to pursue my dreams. Even though she’s gone now I get to thank her everyday through prayer.

You have recently been asked to be a 3D Artist moderator on GameArtisans. Are you
looking forward to this new challenge and why?

Very much so as it gives me the chance to help other artists looking to further pursue their craft, and eventually become professionals themselves. I fondly remember being helped by artists on other forums when I got started and my hope is to give people coming to Game Artisans for the first time the same courtesy. On top of that I get to be apart of a growing community of artists whose work continues to inspire me on a daily basis as well.

Your work in this competition was an inspiration to all! As you help guide future artists on GA.org, I hope to see more of your own personal work on GA.org in the future!
